Solo travel questions
How to find a travel buddy, meet other travellers safely, and get the most out of roammate.
How do I find a travel buddy?
Create a roammate profile with your travel style, daily budget, and where you're headed, then browse travellers whose plans overlap with yours. roammate only surfaces people who pass all three compatibility filters, so you're not scrolling through everyone in the city, just the ones you'd actually get along with. From there you message in-app and agree on something small to do together, like a walking tour or a shared taxi.
How do I meet people while travelling alone?
The easiest way is to attach yourself to a specific plan rather than hoping for a chance encounter. On roammate you can browse plans other travellers have already posted near you (a hike, a museum, a street food crawl) and join one, or post your own and let people take a spot. Because everything is anchored to an activity with a time and place, there's no awkward "so what should we do?" stage.
Is roammate safe for solo female travellers?
roammate is built with solo travellers in mind, and several features exist specifically to reduce risk. Travellers can verify their identity with a government-ID and liveness check, and verified accounts carry a badge, so you can choose to only meet verified users. All communication stays in-app until you choose otherwise, and you can block or report anyone from their profile in two taps. Blocking is immediate and the other person isn't notified. We still recommend the basics: meet in a public place first, and tell someone where you're going.
Do I need to verify my identity?
Verification is optional, but strongly encouraged. Verified travellers complete a government-ID and liveness check and display a verified badge on their profile, so you can decide to connect only with people who have been through it. That badge is the biggest difference between roammate and an open forum or group chat.
Is roammate free?
Yes, completely. roammate is free to download and free to use, with no premium tier, no ads, and no subscription. Messaging, matching, creating plans, and joining excursions are all included at no cost.
How do excursions work?
An excursion is a plan someone has posted with an activity, a location, a date, and a number of spots: a day hike, a shared boat trip, a food tour. You can browse excursions near you and join one, or tap the "+" button to create your own and let other travellers take a place. Once you're in, coordination happens in the in-app chat for that excursion.
What makes roammate different from Couchsurfing, Bumble BFF, or Meetup?
Couchsurfing is a hospitality network. It matches you with a host who has a spare couch, not a companion for the day. Bumble BFF is a general friendship app built around where you live, so it's aimed at people staying put rather than travellers passing through. Meetup organises recurring local events, which works well for residents but rarely fits a three-night stop. roammate matches specifically on travel style, daily budget, and destination overlap, so the people you see are travellers whose trip actually intersects with yours.
What cities does roammate work in?
roammate works anywhere in the world. There's no city list or regional restriction. Set your location or an upcoming destination and you'll see travellers and plans in that area. Activity is naturally highest along well-travelled backpacker routes in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe, and it grows as more travellers in a given city join.
What is roammate?
roammate is a travel app that connects solo travellers and small groups with like-minded people nearby. Whether you're looking for someone to share a taxi, explore a museum, or join you on a hike, roammate helps you find travel companions to share experiences and costs.
How does roammate match travellers?
roammate matches travellers on three factors: travel style (adventure, cultural immersion, slow travel, food-focused), daily budget range, and destination overlap. Filtering on all three before anyone appears in your feed removes mismatched expectations early, which is the most common source of tension when travelling with someone new.
How do I create a travel plan?
Tap the "+" button in the app to create a new travel plan. Add the activity, location, date, and how many people you'd like to join. Travellers nearby will see your plan and can join it.
What types of travellers use roammate?
roammate is for adult solo backpackers and independent travellers. You must be at least 18 to use the app, as set out in our Terms and Conditions. Common use cases include finding a hiking partner, splitting a private room, sharing a guided tour, or simply having company for a meal or a day of exploring.
Is it safe to meet strangers through roammate?
Verified profiles, in-app-only chat before you meet, and two-tap blocking and reporting all reduce the risk, but common sense still matters. Meet in a public place for a first encounter (a hostel common room, a café, a walking tour), tell a friend or hostel staff who you're meeting and where, and keep conversation in-app until you've built trust. If something feels off, cancel; you don't owe anyone an explanation.
How do I report inappropriate behaviour?
You can report or block any user directly from their profile, or email our support team. Every report is reviewed by the roammate team and accounts that violate community guidelines are removed. Blocking takes effect immediately and the other person is not told.
Is roammate available on Android?
Yes. roammate is available on both iOS and Android. Download it free from the App Store or Google Play.
What if I need to cancel a plan?
Life happens. You can cancel or change a travel plan at any time in the app. If people have already joined, let them know as early as you can so they can make other arrangements.
Do I need an internet connection to use roammate?
Yes. Browsing plans, creating them, and messaging all require a connection. Content you've already loaded stays viewable offline, which is useful when you're relying on patchy hostel wifi.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account from Settings > Account > Delete Account in the app, or follow the email request steps on our account deletion page. Deletion is permanent, so save anything you want to keep first. Some records may be retained as described on that page, which explains the retention periods and exceptions.
How can I contact roammate support?
You can reach the support team at support@roammate.com. We typically respond within 24–48 hours.
